CENTRAL FALLS, R.I.__Twenty adults and seven children were left homeless after a fire tore through the fourth-floor of a tenement at 88 Sacred Heart Ave. Friday night.
Pawtucket, Lincoln and Cumberland Fire Departments responded to the scene shortly after the call came in at 10:25 p.m., Fire Battalion Chief Robert E. Bradley Jr. said.
The building was unoccupied at the time of the blaze, Fire Battalion Chief Robert E. Bradley Jr. said.
Two firefighters were injured in the effort. One was treated at the scene for a minor injury, he said,The other injured his shoulder, he said.
The American Red Cross’s Rhode Island Chapter provided debit cards to assist the residents who lost their homes with debit cards — $200 for two nights’ lodging plus additional money for food, Norman D. Menard, the chapter’s deputy director of the emergency services, said. He said the tenement is owned by James Fortier. The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the state fire mMarshal’s office, Bradley said.
