Former British PM Takes Access To Education, Internet As Causes

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – While former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is busy promoting his 700-page memoir, another former prime minister, Gordon Brown, announced Thursday his plan to promote global access to education and Internet access in Africa as his charitable causes.

Brown said he will join the High Level Panel on Education for All of the Global Campaign for Education as a convener and the board of the World Wide Web Foundation.

Brown’s spokesman said the former prime minister selected those causes because he believes he could make a difference. Brown will not receive any form of compensation for serving with the groups.

The Global Campaign for Education is run by Queen Rania of Jordan. Sir Tim Berners Lee heads the World Wide Web Foundation and invited Brown to the foundation’s board.

Aside from these two causes, the spokesman said Brown will continue to deliver speeches and author articles on global issues such as food aid for some African nations.

In July, Brown marked his return to the speaking circuit after he left No. 10 Downing Street at the end of May by speaking at the African Union meeting in Uganda. At the gathering, Brown challenged western nations to keep their promises to poor nations in the midst of belt-tightening measures in the aftermath of the global financial crisis.

Like Blair, Brown is also writing a book. Brown’s topic is not politics, but the global economic crisis.
