Liege, Belgium (AHN) – Nearly 100 angry passengers staged a sit-in on their Ryanair flight on Wednesday after it was diverted to Belgium. The irate passengers demanded that they be taken home.
Most of the passengers on board the discount airliner were French nationals who were slated to land in Paris following vacations in Morocco. The passengers sat in the dark cabin in protest for hours even after the plane’s pilot and crew turned off the lights, locked the restrooms and deplaned.
Airport police said the passengers refused all attempts to leave and were protesting the fact that the plane left three hours late from Fes, Morocco, and as a result were unable to land in Beauvais, France, because the airport there had already closed.
The Ryanair flight touched down in Liege 200 miles away around 11:30pm and passengers were still inside it at 3:30am the next morning until airport officials finally coaxed them off.
Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said in a statement: “Due to the weather related (fog) closure of Paris Beauvais Airport on 16th Nov four Ryanair flights were forced to divert to Liege.
“The majority of passengers followed crew requests to disembark for onward coach transportation to Paris Beauvais. Passengers on one flight, FR5222 (Fez – Paris Beauvais), ignored crew instructions and remained on the aircraft until requested to disembark by Airport Police.
“Ryanair thanks the majority of passengers who followed crew advice and apologizes to them for the inconvenience of these weather related diversions.”
He concluded by saying, “This is now a matter for the police.”
