Somalia: Khat Businesses On Hold As Airport Seized By Insurgents

Marka, Somalia (AHN) – In what Somali khat traders consider to be a hindrance to their businesses, the services of KM 50 airport in the lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia were put on hold Tuesday by Al Shabaab insurgents.

Fighters loyal tothe hard-line group stormed the airport, disarming all of its guards and taking control of the facility, khat traders said.

The group informed the businessmen all airport services had been suspended temporarily.

All Headline News paid a fleeting visit to some markets in Mogadishu that sell khat, the leaves of a shrub that are chewed for their opiate-like qualities. The sale of khat is one of the most lucrative businesses in East Africa. Khat is grown primarily in Ethiopia and Kenya and flown into Somalia every day.

“As you can see, our khat stalls are vacant and consumers are standing everywhere..No green leaves today,” Khadija Farah, a khat businesswomen, told All Headline News.

Farah said some khat traders are negotiating with Al Shabaab about how they could resume their business, adding the move was a great hindrance to the khat trade.

The atmosphere is different from how it was before, Farah lamented.

Comments from Al Shabaab officials were not immediately available, as some of them believe the use of khat is un-Islamic.

The group has already imposed a ban on selling khat in the towns under their control.

Yesterday I had lunch with a group leader from my church and we discussed about how the “financial crisis” had affected most businesses around the world.
