PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The early flakes didn’t keep all the shoppers away from the stores, but crowds at Providence Place mall seemed significantly smaller Sunday afternoon than they were the day before Christmas.
The day after Christmas is usually a busy time for retailers, as customers return or exchange gives and take advantage of after-holiday sales.
One of the busiest places at the mall seemed to be the Apple Store, which was packed with customers and had a large contingent of workers helping set up iPhones and doing other techie tasks.
Elsewhere, things seemed a little quieter, although there were still plenty of people carrying packages and a police officer on traffic detail guided a steady stream of cars as they left the mall.
“I’m shocked people are here,” said Mary Ann V. Antonelli, owner of Bella Art, a paper art specialty botique, who has a store in Johnston but rented space in the mall for the Christmas season.
Although she said it was quiet, she still had customers browsing, hoping to take advantage of her 50 percent off sale.
At the Target store on Bald Hill Road in Warwick around 3 p.m., when the snow was still light, manager Barbara Budlong said the crowds seem to be close to what was expected.
“Guests are still coming in, guests are returning, and guests are buying, so it hasn’t impacted us yet,” she said. “Tomorrow might be another story.”
But at the Lowe’s in Warwick, things were particularly hectic, and it was clear that the storm was driving some of that business.
“It’s been a lot busier than I expected,” said one worker, who declined to give his name because he wasn’t authorized to speak for the company. “We had people lined up outside before we opened at 8 a.m. They wanted snow blowers, shovels and rock salt.”
