South Korea Hit By Cyber Attack After North Korean Shelling

Lawrence Mijares – AHN News Contributor

Seoul, South Korea (AHN) – The cyber crime division of South Korea’s National Police Agency arrested 22 people for falsely spreading text messages and online messages that South Korea had attacked North Korea and for misrepresenting that they are from Soth Korea’s military reserve force and have been called in to respond.

Recently, police are investigating an online community called “Cyber headquarters for People’s Defense” who posted on the country’s number one portal site, Naver, for praising the surprise North Korean artillery attack on the border island of Yeonpyeong last November 24.

South Korea’s National Security Law punishes anyone who praises or sympathizes with the North Korean Communist State.

Previous news reports have shown that skirmishes between the two Koreas are usually accompanied by tsimilar text and online misinformation. The more recent being after the North Korean downing of a South Korean warship last March where South Korea’s main government website was attacked by hackers traced to China who used 120 China-based Internet servers to deny the government website distributed service.

At the time, South Korea’s Major General Bae Deuk-Shik, chief of the Defence Security Command, said the North has an army unit of elite hackers who are able to steal the identities of South Korean Internet users.

Drug Related Shooting Injures Son Of University Veep

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – The son of a New York University vice president was shot and wounded during a drug related shooting in his ritzy Bleecker Street apartment.

Alex Bongard, 24, and Luke Hinde, 31, were reportedly selling marijuana from Bongard’s third-floor apartment about 11:30 p.m. Monday when two men posing as customers showed up at the residence. The men, wearing ski masks, stormed inside the apartment after the dealers opened the door, according to police.

Bongard, who was shot in the chest, and Hinde, who was shot in the stomach, were wounded by the intruders but are expected to survive. On Wednesday both victims in Monday’s shooting were listed in stable condition at Bellevue hospital.

A woman who was also in the apartment at the time escaped injury.

The intruders stole a cash and the woman’s purse and fled the apartment.

When police arrived they found a cache of marijuana.

Bongard’s mother, Debra LaMorte, is the senior vice president of development and alumni affairs at NYU. In 2004 she helped launch a high profile fundraising effort for the university that ultimately yielded $3.1 billion.

Last month a similar incident occurred when a 21-year-old Pace University student was shot dead while selling pot from his downtown Manhattan luxury apartment.

Family Pays Tribute To Pace University Student Killed By Police

Kris Alingod – AHN News Contributor

Pleasantville, NY, United States (AHN) – Family, friends and members of the Pace University football team paid tribute to Danroy “D.J.” Henry Jr. on Friday as the investigation into his death continued.

A memorial service was held at Boston Convention and Visitor Center on what was supposed to be the 21st birthday of Henry, who played wide receiver and defensive back for the football team. The event will be followed by the first game of the football team since his death, a home game on Saturday that will have players wearing black wristbands emobroidered with his number, 12.

Henry died on Oct. 17 after being shot by Mount Pleasant police trying to contain an unruly crowd in a bar in Thornwood. The business management junior allegedly two struck officers with his car.

Police say an officer had knocked on the window of a car parked in the fire lane outside the bar during the brawl. The car, driven by Henry, accelerated and struck the officer, who ended up on the hood of the vehicle. A second officer attempted to pull the first officer from the hood but was also mowed down by the vehicle. The first officer then shot at the car and another officer fired into the car before it crashed into a police cruiser.

Henry’s family and students who witnessed the incident have raised doubts about the police’s reconstruction of events that led to his death. This week, the family requested the Justice Department to take charge of the investigation, citing the leak of a blood alcohol test as proof the probe is compromised. The family has also criticized police for failing to protect gunpowder evidence on the car.

Three Students Arrested After Cops Find Drug Lab In Dorm Room

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Three students were arrested at Georgetown University after authorities discovered a dorm room was doubling as a drug lab. Initially officials believed the room was a meth lab, however investigators determined DMT was being made in Room 926 of Harbin Hall.

Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Hugh Carew and Officer Tisha Ganc said room 926′s residents, John Romano and Charles Smith, along with University of Richmond freshman John Perrone, a visitor on campus, were initially detained early Saturday morning. After questioning, the three men were arrested and charged with manufacturing a controlled substance.

More than 400 bleary-eyed students were forced to evacuate the building around 6 a.m. Saturday while police and safety officials swept the building with drug-sniffing dogs.

Once in the room, cops found an assortment of sketchy-looking chemicals and materials, including a glass jar with an unidentified red substance, mason jars containing a clear liquid, a turkey baster and black suitcase that emanated a strong, chemical smell.

“No drugs were found. Chemicals were found to create an illegal hallucinogenic drug called Dimethyltryptamine (DMT)],” Carew said.

The drug can be inhaled, smoked or ingested. DMT can replicate the sensation of a near-death experience or a dreaming state. It has been linked to visions of alien encounters.

Seven people were tested for exposure because the chemicals can be toxic if inhaled or exposed to skin. They were all cleared.

The three suspects could face up to 20 years in prison and fines of $1 million if convicted.
