Wolfsburg, Germany (AHN) – Germany’s largest automaker, the Volkswagen Group, on Friday reported it delivered 2.66 million vehicles worldwide from January through April of this year.

That marked an increase of 13.9 percent over the first four months of 2010. That meant VW outperformed the world vehicle market by 7.7 percent, company officials said in a statement.

In addition, company officials said the company sold 14.5 percent more vehicles in April alone over the same period a year earlier, selling 690,000 units this April versus 603,500 last April.

“As expected, deliveries by our Group brands developed well in April, too,” Group Board member for Sales Christian Klingler said in Wolfsburg on Friday. “As a result, we have made a good start to the second quarter. We aim to maintain this momentum over the coming months.”

Company officials said they experienced growth in all markets throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Pacific regions.

In addition, Volkswagen AG announced plans to produce electric vehicles in China. The company will team up with Chinese manufacturer FAW Group Co to form a new company that will produce an affordable electric car called Kaili to appeal to the booming market for electric cars in China for sale by 2014.
